Cryptocurrency Mining Facility Denied Permit in Brainerd

Cryptocurrency mining facility faces setback in Brainerd as city council denies permit

In a dramatic turn of events, a cryptocurrency mining facility’s plans to set up shop in Brainerd have hit a roadblock as the city council unanimously voted to deny an interim use permit for the operation. The facility, proposed by VCV Digital Infrastructure, aimed to construct storage containers and cooling towers on a property in the industrial park at 1918 Thiesse Drive.

The council members expressed concerns about the noise impacts of the facility, with some residents near the industrial park voicing their worries. Despite a noise study showing that the anticipated noise levels were within standards set by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, the council remained unconvinced.

Council member Mike O’Day proposed a 12-foot-high concrete wall around the property as a condition for approving the permit, but the motion failed to garner enough support. Other council members suggested alternative soundproofing measures, but disagreements persisted.

In the end, council member Kara Terry made a motion to deny the permit based on inconsistencies with the city’s comprehensive plan and concerns about environmental and noise issues. The motion passed unanimously, leaving the applicant with the option to appeal the decision within 30 days.

The council’s decision reflects a growing debate over the impact of cryptocurrency mining operations on local communities and the environment. Despite differing opinions among council members, the ultimate goal remains to protect the interests of taxpayers, citizens, and neighbors while balancing economic development opportunities.
