Blockchain Initiative Allows Russians to Register Protest Votes Against Putin

Exiled Russian opposition leader Mark Feygin is taking a bold stand against Vladimir Putin’s recent presidential victory by launching a groundbreaking initiative that allows Russians to anonymously register a “protest vote” using blockchain technology. This move comes amidst widespread criticism of Putin’s landslide victory, which many have deemed as predetermined and lacking legitimacy.

Feygin’s referendum, although not legally recognized in Russia, aims to provide a platform for Russians to express their dissent against Putin’s presidency, especially in light of the recent tragic death of opposition leader Alexei Navalny. The voting process will be facilitated through the Russia2024 app, powered by Rarimo’s Freedom Tool, which utilizes blockchain technology and zero-knowledge cryptography to ensure voters’ identities remain untraceable.

Only Russian passport holders, estimated at around 34.6 million, will be eligible to participate in this historic vote. Users will need to download the Russia2024 app, verify their citizenship by scanning their passports, and cast their anonymous vote. The app’s creators are confident in the security of the voting process and assure voters that they need not fear any repercussions.

Lasha Antadze, co-founder of Freedom Tool, emphasized the decentralized nature of the voting system, stating that it is designed to be resistant to attacks and censorship. Despite initial challenges with the app’s availability on the Apple app store, it is expected to be reinstated and is currently accessible on Google’s app store.

The timing of this referendum is crucial as Putin’s victory is expected to embolden Russia’s actions in the ongoing war against Ukraine. Antadze described the technology behind the app as a form of “wartime defense technology” and highlighted its potential to revolutionize election-related voting exercises in other nations as well.

As the world watches the unfolding events in Russia, the use of blockchain technology in this referendum marks a significant step towards empowering citizens to voice their dissent in a secure and anonymous manner. This initiative not only challenges the status quo in Russia but also sets a precedent for future democratic movements around the globe.
