Ethereum Developers Discuss Pectra Upgrade and Client Diversity at Consensus Call #136

On June 27, 2024, Ethereum developers gathered virtually for the All Core Developers Consensus (ACDC) call #136 to discuss important updates and developments within the Ethereum ecosystem. Chaired by Ethereum Foundation (EF) Researcher Alex Stokes, the meeting focused on key topics such as client diversity, multi-client block validation, and the progress of the Pectra upgrade.

During the meeting, developers shared insights into new research on client diversity data collection, with Jorge Arce-Garro from Nethermind presenting findings on improving communication among node operators. This research, funded by an EF grant, aims to enhance client diversity reporting and evaluate different methods for validator node operators to communicate their client type.

Additionally, updates on the Pectra upgrade were discussed, with EF DevOps Engineer Parithosh Jayanthi reporting that the Pectra Devnet 1 is nearing readiness pending EL client readiness. Mikhail Kalinin provided updates on EIP 6110 specifications, while PeerDAS Devnet 1 is live with three different CL client implementations.

Further discussions revolved around EL cross-validation, a proposal by Geth developer Péter Szilágyi to enhance Ethereum’s resilience against bugs by enabling block verification with multiple clients. While this implementation may require significant changes to the Engine API, developers emphasized the importance of testing and benchmarking to ensure its effectiveness.

Nimbus developer Etan Kissling also shared updates on EIP 7688 and EIP 6493, related to upgrading Ethereum’s data serialization methods. While these EIPs are not yet included in the Pectra upgrade, there is ongoing debate among developers about their inclusion and readiness for implementation.

Overall, the ACDC call #136 provided valuable insights into the progress of the Ethereum ecosystem, highlighting the collaborative efforts of developers to enhance the platform’s functionality and security. Stay tuned for more updates on Ethereum’s development journey.
