Introducing a New Bill to Implement Blockchain Technology at the U.S. Border

Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., is making waves in Congress with her new bill that aims to revolutionize border security using blockchain technology. The bill, which is being cosponsored by Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla., would require the Secretary of Homeland Security to implement a blockchain system at the U.S. border.

Blockchain technology, known for its secure and decentralized nature, has the potential to greatly enhance Department of Homeland Security activities such as tracking and managing goods at the border. U.S. Customs and Border Protection has already been exploring the use of blockchain, with a 2020 proof of concept focusing on protecting intellectual property rights on American imports.

If Mace’s bill becomes law, CBP would be mandated to establish a public blockchain platform for border security operations. This platform would store data like biometrics, visa information, and customs documentation, allowing CBP to verify travel and identity documents, improve goods tracking, manage personnel deployment, and share data in real-time across relevant agencies.

DHS has identified numerous use cases for blockchain technology, including issuing digital credentials and creating tamper-proof records and audits. The potential benefits of blockchain for CBP include simultaneous access, validation, and updating of transactions, as well as enhanced security and efficiency in border operations.

With the introduction of this groundbreaking legislation, Mace aims to transform early blockchain initiatives into a comprehensive and secure infrastructure that addresses the crisis at the southern border. If implemented, the bill would also require CBP to establish oversight mechanisms for the blockchain system and report to Congress on its implementation.

The use of blockchain technology in border security represents a significant step forward in modernizing and securing U.S. border operations. As lawmakers continue to explore innovative solutions for border control, Mace’s bill could pave the way for a more efficient and secure border management system.
