Brothers Arrested for $25 Million Cryptocurrency Heist: Allegedly Exploited Ethereum Blockchain

Two brothers, Anton Peraire-Bueno and James Peraire-Bueno, have been taken into federal custody for allegedly orchestrating a sophisticated cryptocurrency heist worth approximately $25 million. The brothers, who studied math and computer science at MIT, used their skills to exploit a vulnerability in the Ethereum blockchain, marking a “first-of-its-kind manipulation” of the system.

According to prosecutors, the brothers meticulously planned the attack over several months, setting up a series of Ethereum validators to conceal their identities and targeting specific traders to carry out the heist. By exploiting a vulnerability in Ethereum’s code, the brothers allegedly gained access to private transactions and altered them to obtain their victims’ cryptocurrency.

After stealing the funds, the brothers allegedly laundered the money through shell companies, leaving a digital trail of incriminating search history related to money laundering and fraud. The victims, as well as representatives from Ethereum, attempted to contact the brothers in the months following the theft.

If convicted, the Peraire-Bueno brothers could face up to 20 years in prison for each of the three charges they are facing, including wire fraud, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, and conspiracy to commit money laundering. Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco praised the efforts of Department of Justice prosecutors and IRS agents in unraveling the complex scheme, emphasizing that the alleged crimes were no match for the authorities.
