Rob Gronkowski to Pay $1.9 Million in Settlement with Voyager Investors
Former NFL star Rob Gronkowski has agreed to pay $1.9 million to settle claims brought against him by former customers of cryptocurrency lender Voyager Digital. The settlement, which is still pending court approval, will see Gronkowski contribute to a $2.4 million pool alongside NBA player Victor Oladipo and racecar driver Landon Cassill.
Gronkowski, known as “Gronk,” became a brand ambassador, shareholder, and token holder for Voyager in September 2021. However, the company filed for bankruptcy in 2022, leading to legal action from disgruntled investors. A group of Voyager investors sued several promoters, including Gronkowski, last year, with a settlement reached in February.
The recent court filing announced that the investors were ready to proceed with the settlement, which will see Gronkowski pay $1.9 million, Oladipo pay $500,000, and Cassill pay $25,000 to resolve the claims against them. If approved, the settlement will dismiss the claims against the three individuals.
Interestingly, the filing coincided with former NFL quarterback Tom Brady, Gronkowski’s former teammate, participating in a comedic roast where comedians joked about Brady’s previous crypto endorsements. Comedian Nikki Glaser even took a jab at Brady’s crypto losses, mentioning Gronkowski in the process.
The settlement with Gronkowski, Oladipo, and Cassill leaves Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban and the team as the remaining defendants for trial in November 2024. The outcome of this case will be closely watched by those involved in the cryptocurrency industry and sports world alike.
