Ethereum Co-Founder Vitalik Buterin Proposes Solution to Speed Up Account Abstraction Adoption

DeFi on Ethereum has long been criticized for being clunky and unintuitive, with limited safeguards for new users. However, a new proposal from Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, could change that.

Account Abstraction is a highly anticipated improvement that promises to make Ethereum wallets more intuitive and safer to use. The only problem is that it is currently incompatible with existing wallets, which has hindered its adoption.

Buterin’s proposal, known as EIP-7702, aims to address this issue by creating a route for existing wallets to use Account Abstraction. This would allow users to access the benefits of Account Abstraction without having to switch to a new wallet type.

According to Ethereum core developer Marius van der Wijden, EIP-7702 introduces a new transaction type that enables existing wallets to emulate the functions of Account Abstraction wallets. If successful, this proposal could unlock new transaction types, prevent users from losing access to their funds, and open up new use cases for the Ethereum network.

Van der Wijden expects that EIP-7702 will be included in Ethereum’s next major upgrade, scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2024.

Account Abstraction has been in development for some time, with previous updates introducing features like ERC-4337 to enable developers to build Account Abstraction wallets. However, the lack of support for Account Abstraction and the difficulty of switching to the new wallet type have slowed its adoption.

Another proposal, EIP-3074, aimed to address this issue by allowing users with non-Account Abstraction wallets to delegate control to smart contracts. While this could help with adoption, it also raised concerns about the security of users’ funds.

Buterin’s EIP-7702 proposal aims to streamline the adoption of Account Abstraction by aligning previous routes to it into a unified roadmap. This would allow existing wallets to access all the features of Account Abstraction without the risks associated with EIP-3074.

Overall, Account Abstraction promises to make DeFi on Ethereum more intuitive and safer to use. With the potential for new transaction types, automatic payments, and improved user experience, this proposal could be a game-changer for the Ethereum ecosystem.
